Mondrian, with a twist

2009.11.26

I came up with the idea for today’s photo after my Jackson Pollock lookalike last Saturday. I’ve taken a shine to Piet Mondrian’s paintings since I came across them through an episode of the TV show Hustle. He was a Dutch artist (1872-1944) and specialised in a style which he called neoplasticism – a response to the cubism works of Pablo Picasso which he saw when he visited Paris in 1912. Mondrian’s pictures in this style tend to feature a grid of black lines with blocks of primary colour at strategic points. While his grids tend to be in parallel with the edges of the canvas I decided my take on it would be a little different. I drew my grid in the same sort of way but included some triangles and I’ve photographed it from one corner to introduce some additional angles into the image. I’ve purposely kept my colouring in fairly rough to give the blocks of colour some texture. It’s not a Mondrian but I’ve had fun creating it!
